Farmhouse Renovation

Renovations included converting an unused living room to a master bedroom suite, adding closet space in the guest bedroom for overnight bed and breakfast guests, relocating the kitchen to a brighter, more spacious area, remodeling the former kitchen space to an in-home office, converting the basement to a family room/playroom and the addition of a dining room that won the Gold award in the 1999 Better Homes competition.

The kitchen was renovated with stock cherry cabinets with brass and porcelain knobs.  A countertop drawer cabinet fills the corner.  Cabinets under the sink were installed about eight inches from the wall to allow for a wide plant shelf without creating a narrow counter.

The backsplash is tiled with handmade tiles with hand painted impressions of native wildflowers.  A hybrid radiant floor heats the kitchen.  The crown molding at the ceiling matches the crown molding in the living room.

The cherry island, used as a baking center, has a Verdi Antique marble top.  Doors and drawers hide baking equipment; the marble top is used for rolling dough.  The new pantry has a pass-through to the dining room with specialized hardware that allows the bi-fold doors to fold flat against the wall.  All pantry shelves are adjustable, with heavy gauge brackets and standards.

The custom entertainment center has flipper doors and a television bracket that pulls out and swivels.

The flipper doors fold completely into the cabinet.

The master bedroom suite features custom built-in dressers and shelving.  New birch hardwood flooring in the master bedroom unites the room with the living room, dining room and hall.

The new dining room won the Gold award in the 1999 Better Homes competition.  The room was created by converting the inside corner of an L-shaped area to an outside corner.  Structurally, the roof loads on the former inside corner needed to be supported, while accommodating the desired open floorplan.  The solution was to use turned columns on paneled pedestals and a three-foot kneewall with paneled wainscoting.  A ceiling beam with crown molding details separates the dining room from the living room, creating an elegant atmosphere with an open floorplan and a clearly defined dining room.
