Addition and Renovation of a Cape-Style House

The addition of a kitchen, living room, dining room, master bedroom and upstairs tower nearly doubled the size of this cape, and changed the focus towards the back of the house, which has stunning views of the mountains.

This addition won the Bronze award in the 1998 Better Homes competition.

Before...

The original house was dark and small.

...and AFTER...

The addition rearranged most of the downstairs to incorporate a new kitchen, living room, master bedroom and bathroom into a bright, open floorplan. The enclosed porch was removed and replaced with a covered entryway and a mudroom. The porch ceiling is constructed using exposed beaded basswood rafters with shaped tails and chamfered edges. There is a pergola on the side of the house for hanging plants, and a redwood deck with wraparound stairs off the living room. A second redwood deck opens off the master bedroom. The siding on the master bedroom transitions from clapboard to shingle with a decorative diamond above the arched window. The second floor tower has round windows on both sides.

The kitchen features custom-built maple cabinets, dovetailed maple drawers with full extension drawer slides and a green Formica counter with a cherry edge.  The maple door panels and drawer fronts were carefully selected to show different types of figuring in the wood.  The corners of the bead around the perimeter of the drawer fronts were hand-carved to allow an uninterrupted line.

Select white maple flooring runs continuously throughout the kitchen, dining room, living room and master bedroom.  A cherry breakfast bar separates the kitchen and the living room.

Under a cathedral ceiling, the living room features a diagonal bay with a cherry windowseat.

The windowseat has full extension drawers, beaded frames around flat panels capping the ends of the armrests and ornamental cast iron grates on the back and below the drawers.  The French casement window above the windowseat opens completely, leaving no center post.

The master bedroom features an arched window with flanking sconces.

The new bathroom off the main hall has a wall of custom built maple cabinets, a laminated maple counter with a beaded backsplash, dovetailed maple drawers on full extension drawerslides and a laundry bin.  The whirlpool tub adjoins the master bedroom, and can be separated from the rest of the bathroom with a pocket door.
